Digital Communications Intern - Education Policy Program (Paid) - Remote or In-person

 

New America’s Education Policy Program (EPP) seeks applicants who have a strong interest in communications, public policy, web content, and analytics for our paid Fall 2021 communications internship. 

The communications intern will assist our communications manager and associate in extracting key information from our research, composing communications plans, media pitches, as well as website content, social media collateral, and analytics reports from our website and digital assets. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical and writing skills in their applications and an interest in (or desire to learn about) public policy issues relevant to New America and Education Policy. 

The ideal candidate is a self-starter, detail-oriented, has excellent writing and verbal skills, and has some experience or interest in public policy, social media, website or social listening analytics, media relations and PR, or journalism.

Responsibilities

  • Work 30-40 hours a week from either our downtown D.C. office or remotely (hours flexible)
  • Help the communications manager and associate write communications plans, media lists, and pitches for programs studying a variety of timely education policy issues
  • Assist in the management of EPP’s social media accounts and development of sharable graphics
  • Monitor press coverage of New America’s Education Policy Program, and assist in capturing all media mentions in our Salesforce database
  • Assist in the composition of analytics reports from social listening software and GoogleAnalytics to inform digital communication strategies and updates for leadership
  • Update and ensure consistent quality of content posted to the New America website in accordance with our brand and style guidelines
  • Provide as-needed staffing support to education policy events 
  • Undertake various short research and writing projects, and light administrative duties as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Excellent writing and communications skills
  • Intellectual curiosity, motivation, and a desire to learn on the job
  • Applied media relations experience and demonstrated interest in policy issues relevant to New America are preferred
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills
  • Experience or interest in website editing and CMS
  • Strong attention to detail, together with excellent organizational skills and time management
  • Prior experience in Salesforce, Google Analytics, social listening software, and/or email marketing platforms a plus
  • Some technical expertise—in areas like graphic design and editing (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop); mapping; data visualizations; or coding (HTML, Javascript)—is a plus

Application Process

Submit a resume (cover letter not required). We are looking for evidence of how you can communicate complex ideas in straightforward, intuitive ways, so include a writing sample between 500 and 800 words on the topic of your choice and 3 tweets or social media posts promoting key points or enticing someone to read your content. You are encouraged to be as creative as possible. You may also include examples of any other previous work that may be relevant to the position (graphics design, visualizations, charts, social media strategies, etc.). Candidates without at least one writing sample will not be considered. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. The ideal candidate would be available to start in late-August or early-September.
