Communications Intern


About the Better Life Lab

The Better Life Lab at New America is a small team of researchers and storytellers working in solidarity with the movement for work-life justice. We focus on gender equity, elevating the value of care, and rewiring social policy and workplace culture to work for today’s families. The team works collaboratively to maximize its impact on workplace culture, social policy, and gender equality. It employs a variety of innovative tactics and iterates on them based on analysis of their efficacy. Collegiality, self-motivation, creativity, and energy are key to thriving in this flexible work environment.

Position Summary

The Lab is looking for a communications intern to work 20 hours per week from September 30, 2021 through December 22, 2021. The intern will work remotely or out of New America’s Washington, DC office and will be paid $15-$25 per hour depending on experience. The Lab is open to candidates living abroad with U.S. work authorization. Please note that temporary employees at New America are not eligible for benefits such as health insurance and paid time off.

The communications intern will:

  • Write the weekly Better Life Lab newsletter, Your Life, Better, and work with the Lab’s team members to edit and publish it.
  • Manage the Better Life Lab’s Twitter presence by crafting and posting a mix of original and partner content.
  • Work with New America’s Communications team to develop communications plans for the Lab’s reports, events, and projects in advance of release.


  • A background in public policy, journalism, sociology, gender studies, communications, or other subjects with a demonstrable connection to the Lab’s focus areas (work-family justice, work redesign, gender equity).
  • Able to convey complex information, including academic research and public policy, to a broad and diverse audience in a concise, clear, and conversational manner.
  • Able to keep track of deadlines and communicate potential conflicts with the Lab’s staff.
  • Able to give and receive timely feedback and edits.
  • Able to think creatively about how to advance a culture of equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism both within the Lab and beyond.
