Job Summary: Reporting to the President and Chief Transformation Officer, the Vice President of Content and Communications will be responsible for, and lead the team that executes, the development and delivery of New America’s content, products, and public-facing experiences. Working to support New America’s broader work, as well as the work of the programs and initiatives operating within New America’s organization, the Vice President of Content and Communications will serve in a cross-functional role across the work, simultaneously working as editor-in-chief, executive producer, product developer, publicist, and storyteller. The  Vice President of Content and Communications should share New America’s deep commitment to equity and to making a positive impact on the future of America.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Vice President of Content and Communications will oversee the production, editorial, communications, and events functions and teams.

Editorial, Content, Experience, and Product Development:

  • Supervise the production and distribution of all program policy-related products (reports, blogs, papers) including coordination with digital and production teams, and with the program staff members responsible for quality control.
  • Lead and oversee editorial function that includes a variety of content types (short and long-form print, audio, and video) in a mix of live/in-person, physical goods, and digital products.
  • Lead and oversee the strategy and execution of events and experience (in-person and online), including design, production, and distribution.
  • Lead and oversee studio operations which include audio recording & editing, video recording & editing, and live-events recording & editing.
  • Lead and oversee product development including the design and operability of digital platforms and products, including New America’s website and social platforms.
  • Lead and oversee content production Supervise designers, producers, and product creators and their respective budgets (internal and external).
  • Continuously develop strategic approaches to communications and content in ways that support the strategic vision and roadmap for organizational growth. 

Internal and External Communications:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a strategic communications design, to advance NA’s brand across our own platforms and across third-party platforms; broaden awareness of its programs and priorities; and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences.
  • Create marketing/public relations strategies that allow NA leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers.
  • Provide strategic communications leadership and guidance across the New America organization, including plans to maximize content and event impact, earned media coverage, and audience engagement.
  • Lead the strategy behind New America content positioning and media engagement, including coordinating the work of more than 100 scholars and 15+ programs.
  • Supervise the measurement and reporting of all analytics tools to help New America assess impact, engagement, and implications for the future.
  • Coordinate with the Development team, in particular, to support their work with strategic help, content,  events, and experiences that advance fundraising and development.
  • Proactively lead New America's storytelling, message development, and narration efforts.
  • Support internal communications activities, including all-staff programming.

Organizational Leadership:

  • Serve as an ambassador for the organization and build a wide and diverse network of internal and external relationships to support communications objectives.
  • The goal is to advance the organization’s position with relevant constituents, as well as to drive broader awareness and donor support for the organization.
  • Responsible for making decisions related to the overall management of the organization, including but not limited to staff expectations, culture, benefits, and mission and vision as established in New Americas strategic plan. The group makes recommendations to the executive office (CEO and President/Chief Transformation Officer) on matters of adding and removing programs, hubs in the national network, and other issues that involve major strategic choices and disbursement of resources, in consultation with the Leadership Team.

Team Development/Management:

  • Oversee and manage events, production, communications, digital, design, and editorial teams, managing a team of 10-18.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annual performance appraisals, and administer salary adjustments.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • The Vice President of Content and Communications should have a proven track record of success and impact with their work product and with their leadership and management experience.
  • A “T-shaped” thinker and doer. Must have experience, and be comfortable with, a broad scope of responsibilities, projects, and teams to manage. At the same time, but be able to go deep into one area and at multiple altitudes (as both an architect of higher-level strategy and as project executor).
  • Minimum 10 years of communications, content, or relevant experience in a leadership role at a purpose-driven agency, content brand, or nonprofit entity.
  • A hands-on systems-thinker that can efficiently see, coordinate and manage the “sum of the parts”, a complex (number and variety of disciplines and constituents)  Candidate should have a track record developing successful strategic directions for content and events designed to inform, illuminate, educate.
  • A creative operator that can architect, articulate, and shape compelling communications and successfully turn ideas into manageable project plans, deliverables, and timelines.
  • Comfortable and resilient in times of chaos, calm, and crisis. Must be flexible and able to multitask; can work within a multi-faceted, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions; demonstrating resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems.
  • Exceptional and succinct written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface at all levels of the organization.
  • Experience taking in-depth, complex ideas and issues (of policy, strategy, organizational design) and bringing them to a variety of audiences, including major donors, sponsors, press, and policymakers.
  • Experience managing and distributing department budgets that include personnel, and direct and indirect costs.
  • Proven experience managing teams that run high-profile events, media relations, and web-based product development.
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently. Very detail-oriented, ability to move quickly between program issues and content types.
  • High EQ and maturity, with the ability to serve as a collaborative and unifying force in groups that may have disparate interests and concerns. Sincere commitment to working collaboratively at all levels with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, scholars, donors, and other supporters.
  • Firm and fair leader, that can inspire and that can empathetically lead from the front and from behind. Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.

Location: This position is based in New America’s Washington, DC office. Must be available to work in-person and on-site (in the DC office and/or in other locations).
