Senior Editor, Communications Ranking Digital Rights (part-time)

RDR works to promote freedom of expression and privacy on the internet by creating global standards and incentives for companies to respect and protect users’ rights. We do this by ranking the world’s most powerful digital platforms and telecommunications companies on relevant commitments and policies, based on international human rights standards. We work with companies as well as advocates, researchers, investors, and policymakers to establish and advance global standards for corporate accountability.

Ranking Digital Rights seeks a dynamic communications professional with superior editing and copywriting skills to work with our team on a part-time basis.

This person will help raise the visibility of Ranking Digital Rights’ research and analysis among our key stakeholders and the broader public by helping to amplify RDR’s communications content and messaging to make it one of the most influential voices shaping the future of the internet.

Competitive candidates will possess a proven track record in strategic communications coupled with strong writing and editing skills. They will also bring creativity, keeping our content accurate, consistent, and engaging. The ideal candidate will also have experience working with early-career communications staff, as well as the ability to act as a writing coach to enable all members of the RDR team to publish their best work.

The senior editor, communications, will report to the projects director, and work closely and collaboratively with our communications officer and other RDR team members. This is a part-time position that may turn into a full-time role in 2022.

  • Work with the Projects Director and Communications Officer to support the implementation of a communications strategy for Ranking Digital Rights as a whole, as well as in relation to specific research products and other activities
  • Write, edit, and refine copy for our new website, set to launch in October 2021
  • Write, edit, or repurpose copy for blog posts, talking points, email newsletters, investor briefs, policy papers, press releases, and slide decks for RDR websites, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and MailChimp
  • Work with staff experts to shape their findings for popular media channels, conferences, and other public appearances
  • Edit grant proposals and donor reports, as needed
  • Develop and formalize our internal style guide to support the overall RDR communications strategy

Preferred qualifications

  • 4-6 years’ editorial and communications experience in journalism, public relations, or marketing, including at least 1-2 years managing others
  • Superior oral and written English-language communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects on parallel timelines
  • Familiarity with emerging issues and dilemmas at the intersection of technology, corporate governance, and human rights
  • Familiarity with best usability practices in print, broadcast, and web publishing
  • Familiarity with Google Office suite

Compensation: $50.00/hour

Location: RDR operates as a distributed team, with some staff based at New America in Washington, D.C., and other staff and contractors based in locations around the world. We will consider applications from candidates based anywhere but prefer candidates who can overlap with a 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. day UTC -5 (Eastern Standard Time) for at least four hours a day.
