Senior Writer/Editor, Center for Education and Skills

The Center on Education and Skills at New America (CESNA) is seeking a senior writer and editor to guide the development of the program’s wide range of publications, including policy reports and briefs, op-eds, tool kits, case studies, project profiles, and social media. Housed within New America’s Education Policy Program, CESNA was founded in 2015 to follow developments in the world of work and to assess the effectiveness of education—both academic and work-based—in helping all Americans access good jobs and economic security. Specifically, the CESNA team works to:       

  • Advance new, equity-informed models of college- and career-readiness for secondary students as well as adults, with a particular focus on apprenticeship.
  • Develop strategies for linking the historically segregated tracks of academic and technical education, and for better connecting educational credentials to facilitate lifelong learning.
  • Increase understanding of the implications of new technologies and economic trends for the American workforce.  

The senior writer and editor will lead CESNA’s publication efforts, authoring original pieces and editing papers and reports written by program staff. This position reports to the Director of the Center on Education and Skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Write compelling and persuasive content on the research and policy questions at the center of CESNA’s work, including workforce and economic development policy, apprenticeship, career preparation, and the future of work. 
  • Review and edit policy reports, briefs, blogs, op-eds, and other pieces written by CESNA staff.
  • Liaise between the CESNA team and New America and EPP communications staff as well as with external contractors, including graphic designers.
  • Work with authors to improve content, structure, and style where needed; mentor young writers.  
  • Ensure all final copy is ready for publication, appropriate for target audiences, and consistent with New America editorial standards and style guidelines.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • At least 5-7 years of experience, either as a journalist and/or public policy or academic editor.
  • Ability to write and edit documents for clarity, content, accessibility, formatting, and style;
  • Knowledge of education and workforce development policy a plus.
  • Excellent organizational skills—candidates should have the ability to prioritize work and manage time on multiple projects and tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Moderate travel required.
