Development Manager - Development
The Development Manager identifies, researches, and analyzes information on prospective donors to New America. The Manager provides research support to key leadership and relationship directors in order to inform development strategies and advance potential donor relationships. The candidate will qualify, screen, and rate potential donors, and proactively identify new prospective major and principal gift donors. As part of a collaborative team, the manager coordinates with the Development team to ensure that the best prospects are assigned to each frontline fundraiser. This position plays a critical role in the overall success of the growing New America’s fundraising capacity for unrestricted support and plays an important role in ensuring the organization’s success in all aspects of fundraising and donor stewardship. The Development Manager should be a fundraising generalist who is comfortable doing a little of everything, from donor prospecting to introductions, to making an ask, to donor communications, to stewardship.
- Supports programs and activities to secure funding from individuals, corporations, foundations and government sources to include special events, annual and capital campaigns and specific program fundraising.
- Conduct proactive research to identify new potential major and principal gift donors using push technology, data mining, screening, and other methods.
- Proactively track and disseminate donor and prospect-related information. Monitor news and publicly available financial information on prospects from SEC filings, press releases, and major newspapers to identify new prospects.
- Analyze various geographic areas and industries to ascertain New America’s strength and fundraising viability in particular market sectors.
- Support the VP of Development and the Director of Development to help refine portfolios, developing critical strategic partnerships to help ensure portfolios have the right prospects to maximize fundraising potential and to support the development of high-capacity portfolios.
- Perform special assignments upon request (examples: data analytics projects; etc.).
- Stay current on industry-wide best practices and trends in research and prospect management; engage with and participate in team conversations to brainstorm new projects and processes to increase effectiveness and efficiency.
- This individual works across individual, foundation and corporate fundraising disciplines and contributes to and manages systems and processes required to ensure exemplary donor experiences and to enable the organization’s ability to build and grow its fundraising efforts.
- With oversight by other Development team members, contribute to and steward relationships with a portfolio of donors, working with stakeholders to develop project ideas and help secure financial support.
- Organize and execute donor quarterly cultivation events, including drafting invitations, preparing meeting agendas and background materials, RSVP tracking, speaker invitations and managing follow up.
- In close collaboration with the Development and Communications teams, oversee fundraising and stewardship calendar, draft and execute fundraising appeals via social media and other platforms.
- Other duties as assigned.
- May need to work (some) evenings and weekends and be capable of planning and managing independent travel.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required, or equivalent professional and work experience.
- 5-7 years’ prospect research and portfolio management experience (non-profit setting preferred).
- Outstanding experience collaborating with colleagues at all levels to reach objectives and leading projects from inception to completion to meet cross functional needs.
- High proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and CRM database required; Salesforce preferred.
- Superior communication (both written and interpersonal), organizational, project management, and analytical skills; able to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Experienced with tools such as iWave, Nexis for Development Professionals, Foundation Center Directory, WealthX, and WealthPoint.
- Working knowledge of and compliance with industry best practices, including a strong commitment to donor privacy; exercise discretion and uphold confidentiality.
- Curious, intuitive, proactive, resourceful; exceptional and unfailing attention to detail.
- Adaptable and responsive to feedback in the development and creation of new systems and processes.
- Proven ability to excel working independently and as part of a (hybrid/in-person) team environment.
- Good sense of humor, adaptable, accountable to deadlines, and strong sense of team spirit.
- Demonstrated interest in public policy.
- This person must work well alone and under supervision and demonstrate a professional demeanor whether speaking to others in person, over the phone, via email or through letters
- Comfort with ambiguity and ability to provide logical next steps toward action items with minimal supervision.
- Flexibility and a can-do attitude and willingness to pitch in.
- A successful track record of identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and stewarding prospects and donors in the four, five to six-figure range.
- This is a hybrid position with two days in a physical office located in Washington, D.C.,however New America is very much open to a qualified remote candidate.

Salary and benefits: The salary range for this position is $68,000-$73,000 depending on experience and demonstrated competencies.
Our compensation packages include generous health and retirement benefits and paid time off, hybrid work arrangement, including 20 days in your first year of employment, summer and wellness Fridays, and office-wide closure between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day.
